WAFU B U-20 Championship: Flying Eagles Target Early Semi-Final Ticket Against Togo

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria will be aiming to secure an early place in the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship when they take on Togo’s Junior Sparrow Hawks in a crucial Group B encounter on Thursday afternoon (today).

Abdu Maikaba’s side made an impressive start to their title defence with a thrilling 4-2 victory over arch-rivals Ghana, a result that put them firmly in control of the group.

Another three points against Togo would guarantee Nigeria a place in the last four with a game to spare, and keep them on course to successfully defend their regional crown.

Togo head into the contest under immense pressure after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in their opening fixture.

Another loss in Yamoussoukro would end their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage before their final group game against the Black Satellites of Ghana.

Nigeria will be expected to build on the attacking display that saw them score four goals against Ghana, although Maikaba is likely to demand greater defensive discipline after his side conceded twice in that encounter.

The Flying Eagles have enjoyed an impressive run in the WAFU B competition in recent years and are among the favourites to lift the trophy once again.

Victory over Togo would not only confirm their semi-final place but also strengthen their bid for another regional title.

The Group B encounter will kick off at 3pm Nigerian time in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The two finalists at the WAFU B U-20 Championship will qualify for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Ghana.
