Nigeria’s biggest athletics star, Tobi Amusan, is just one race away from making Commonwealth Games history after cruising into the women’s 100m hurdles final with an authoritative victory in her opening heat on Thursday morning.
The reigning world record holder looked every inch a champion as she stormed to victory in 12.19 seconds, finishing comfortably ahead of South Africa’s Marione Fourie (12.50) and Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill (12.69) to seal automatic qualification for tonight’s final at 9:49 p.m. (BST) at Scotstoun Stadium.

Running in a +3.8m/s tailwind, Amusan never looked under pressure. She exploded from the blocks, attacked every hurdle with trademark precision and eased across the finish line, sending an unmistakable warning to the rest of the field.
For the Nigerian, the heat was merely the first step in what could become another defining chapter of an already legendary career.
Tonight, Amusan will be chasing an unprecedented third consecutive Commonwealth Games women’s 100m hurdles title, having struck gold at Gold Coast 2018 and successfully defended her crown in Birmingham 2022. No Nigerian has ever achieved such dominance in the event.
The 28-year-old has already etched her name into athletics history. In 2022, she became Nigeria’s first World Athletics champion, stunning the world by setting the still-standing 12.12-second world record in Eugene, Oregon. Since then, she has added Diamond League titles, African crowns and established herself as Africa’s greatest female hurdler.
She arrived in Glasgow in excellent form after another impressive Diamond League campaign, and her composed display in the heats suggests she is peaking at exactly the right time.
Amusan’s qualification also lifts the mood in the Nigerian camp, which has enjoyed an outstanding Games so far.
