Technical director and general coordinator of the annual Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, Yusuf Alli has disclosed that all technical areas, medical needs and security arrangements for this year’s edition have been perfected.

Sports247 reports that, with the 11th edition of the race set to take place this Saturday in the Okpekpe countryside of Edo State, Alli declared that, having maintained high standards since inception, another flawless outing is expected.
Alli also disclosed that, unlike 40 elite runners that featured in the 2025 edition, more than 50 stars from across the world are expected at this year’s version of the contest, which is largely regarded as West Africa’s premier Gold Label Road Race.
He added that the athletes started arriving in Nigeria on Monday, while officials also intensified efforts in all departments and organizational areas of need, in order to ensure a successful competition on Saturday.
The ex-international long jumper and Olympian also expressed confidence in the medical crew led by Dr. Sam Ogbondeminu, while also pointing out that security has been strengthened in view of recent social issues in the country.
“The athletes started arriving from across the world since Monday ahead of the race this weekend. All the technical areas have been perfected and our personnel are working round the clock to ensure we achieve a great race on Saturday.
“At the last edition, we had over 40 elite athletes, but this year the number should be above 50 because of those who have shown interest in competing. The numbers keep increasing with every edition and that speaks about the pedigree of the race.
“We have significantly improved security around our runners. The athletes will be closely monitored and the race routes will be properly covered before, during and after the event. Dr. Sam Ogbondeminu is the medical director for the race.
“He is the first Nigerian medical doctor to become a World Athletics-certified medical director, which speaks volumes about his competence,” Alli revealed at length, while also serving a strong hint about various side attractions on offer.
