Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games women’s long jump gold medalist, Chioma Ajunwa-Okpara has taken a major step forward in the battle against drug abuse among Nigerian youths with her successful organisation of an enlightenment seminar in Lagos.

Sports247 reports that the seminar, which was staged under the banner of Chioma Ajunwa Foundation drew a large number of health experts and social workers, who spoke on the dangers of illicit drugs among youths and drug trafficking.
All speakers at the seminar, which was part of activities marking United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse, also raised an alarm over the consumption of synthetic substances among Nigerian youths generally, not only those engaged in sports.
The seminar, which took place at Police College in Ikeja, Lagos also had in attendance many stakeholders, including counsellor-generals of Germany and China as well as traditional rulers, medical practitioners, sports personalities, athletes and students.
Ajunwa pointed out that abusing drugs can truncate God given talents and crush big dreams, while Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) commander at Tincan Port, Lagos Eucharia Ekwu raised alarm over increased abuse among Nigerians.
Ekwu pointed out, “The number of synthetic and psychopathic drugs in the market is increasing and the people consuming them is also increasing. This has become a problem for the government.
“People using drugs start from the age of 12 in the primary school because these drugs are readily available. This is why the NDLEA is working double hard to prevent drugs from coming into the country.”
