The vice-president of Fencing Federation of Nigeria (FFN), Mrs Rachael Samuel has admitted the need for the governing body to acquire more private and corporate collaborations ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos.
Sports247 reports that Mrs Samuel stated this while speaking during the Invest Lagos 3.0 forum, which she described as a very useful platform that helped in creating new opportunities for national development, investment and social inclusion.
Samuel added that investment in fencing would strengthen Nigeria’s sporting future and global presence, while hosting the Commonwealth championship would showcase the role of sports in driving economic growth in the country.
She also noted that the event, which was organised by Lagos State government in collaboration with Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), highlighted fencing’s potential to attract valuable partnerships.
While acknowledging that improved sports infrastructure would create a lasting legacy beyond the competition, Samuel added that such collaborations would be essential to successfully hosting the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
The fencing vice-president also disclosed that the forum, which was attended by investors, policymakers, diplomats, business leaders and government officials from across Africa, revealed new ideas in creating lasting opportunities for athletes.
“As Lagos prepares to host the championships, collaboration remains vital to achieving success. Sports development depends on shared vision, commitment and active stakeholder participation.
“The championships present an opportunity to demonstrate how sports can contribute to growth, inclusion and investment,” said Samuel, who also engaged stakeholders on the need for strategic partnerships and sponsorship support.
Sports247 reports further that the summit discussed steps towards strengthening partnerships, attracting investments, promoting sustainable economic growth and efforts that will increase women’s participation and leadership in sports.
