Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has pledged Nigeria’s full commitment to successfully hosting the 2027 Africa Schools Games in Abuja.
Speaking on the country’s preparations, Dikko revealed that the event has the backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the tournament as a key part of Nigeria’s grassroots sports development agenda.
“The President is fully committed to the success of the Games,” Dikko said.
According to the NSC chairman, Nigeria is currently undergoing what he described as a major sports infrastructure transformation aimed at positioning the country to host world-class sporting events.
“We are carrying out a massive infrastructure reset,” he implied.
Dikko noted that hosting the Africa Schools Games aligns directly with the federal government’s vision of using sports as a tool for youth development and talent discovery.
“This event fits perfectly into the President’s mandate for grassroots sports development,” he explained.
The sports administrator also highlighted Tinubu’s role as a patron of the Africa Schools Games Coordination Commission under the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.
“The President has shown strong support for this project,” he added.
Nigeria hopes the Games will provide a platform to discover and nurture future champions while boosting sports participation among young people across the continent.
“The tournament could become a major turning point for grassroots sports in Africa,” many sports observers believe.
Preparations are expected to intensify as Abuja gets ready to welcome young athletes from across the continent in 2027.
