Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israeli forces had killed Izz al-Din al-Haddad, described by Israel as Hamas’s top military commander in Gaza.
“We assassinated [Izz al-Din] al-Haddad, commander of Hamas’ armed wing in the Gaza Strip,” Netanyahu and Katz said in a joint statement published by Israeli media.
The statement said al-Haddad was one of “the architects” of the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023.
Hamas had not issued an immediate response to the announcement.
