Nigeria’s remarkable Commonwealth Games campaign reached another milestone on Saturday evening as Ruth Usoro produced a superb series of jumps to claim silver in the women’s long jump, adding yet another medal to Team Nigeria’s rapidly growing collection in Glasgow.
Usoro recorded a best leap of 6.87 metres, finishing behind England’s Jazmin Sawyers, who successfully defended her Commonwealth title with 6.93m. Australia’s Brooke Buschkuehl settled for bronze after jumping 6.80m.

For Usoro, the silver medal is another major achievement in a career that has steadily risen through the international ranks.
The Akwa Ibom-born athlete first announced herself on the global stage in the United States, where she became one of the most decorated athletes in NCAA history while representing Texas Tech University. She won multiple NCAA titles in both the long jump and triple jump, becoming one of the few Nigerian women to dominate collegiate athletics in two horizontal jump events.
Her success earned her places at the World Athletics Championships, the African Championships, the Commonwealth Games, and the Olympic Games, where she has consistently represented Nigeria among the world’s elite jumpers.
In Glasgow, Usoro once again demonstrated why she remains one of Africa’s finest field athletes.
Against a world-class field that included defending champion Sawyers and Australia’s experienced Buschkuehl, the Nigerian stayed composed throughout the competition before producing the leap that secured her place on the podium.
The silver medal is another important contribution to what has become one of Nigeria’s finest Commonwealth Games performances in recent history.
