Nigeria’s number one female tennis player Khadijat Mohammed has described the national team’s successful campaign at the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III in Botswana as a “magical” experience after helping the country secure a historic promotion to Europe/Africa Group II.

The Nigerian women’s team delivered a flawless performance throughout the tournament, winning all three of their Group C ties to seal promotion. They began their campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Namibia, followed it with another 3-0 sweep of Madagascar, before clinching qualification with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Burundi.
Reflecting on the achievement, Mohammed expressed pride in the team’s determination and unity throughout the competition.
“It was a magical experience representing Nigeria and helping the team gain promotion. Everyone gave everything on the court, and I’m proud of what we achieved together,” she said.
The promotion marks a historic milestone for Nigerian women’s tennis, as the team secured a place in Europe/Africa Group II for the first time, underlining the steady progress being made by the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) in developing the sport and improving the country’s international standing.
For Mohammed, the success was the reward for months of preparation and teamwork, with every member of the squad contributing to Nigeria’s unbeaten run in Gaborone.
The achievement also caps a remarkable 2026 for Nigerian tennis. Earlier in the year, the men’s national team earned promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II, meaning both Nigeria’s women’s and men’s teams elevated their positions on the international tennis ladder in the same calendar year.
The twin promotions represent one of the most successful periods in recent history for Nigerian tennis and highlight the federation’s growing investment in talent development and international competition.
With promotion secured, Mohammed and her teammates will now set their sights on competing in Europe/Africa Group II, where they will face stronger opposition as Nigeria continues its push to establish itself among the continent’s leading tennis nations.
