The president of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa has expressed delight with the presence of a large number of elite athletes in the country’s track and field contingent to the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Sports247 reports.

Okowa gave a rundown of names in the huge assemblage of top athletes available for Team Nigeria at Glasgow 2026, and reckoned that the contingent will pull off tremendous results during the six-day track and field events scheduled to hold from Monday to Saturday at Scotstoun Stadium.
He mentioned the presence of women’s 100m hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan, two top-five men’s 100m sprinters (Kanyinsola Ajayi and Favour Ashe) as well as Olympic Games 400m finalist Samuel Ogazi as potential gold medalists in Glasgow.
The AFN boss further flaunted female 100m ace Rosemary Chukwuma, shot put veteran Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and vastly-improved javelin thrower Chinecherem Nnamdi, all of who he cited as top athletes capable of realising the federation’s target of seven gold medals.
“I feel very happy with the great spirit in camp, and we can easily meet our target of seven gold medals. The number of top Nigerian athletes participating in these games is encouraging. It signals a renewed spirit and commitment to represent their fatherland at international competitions.
“In camp, we also have US-based Alaba Akintola, Adekalu Fakorede, Udodi Onwuzurike, hurdler Nathaniel Ezekiel, Edidiong Okon Udo, Temitope Adeshina, Prestina Ochonogor, Ruth Usoro, veteran Patience Okon-George, Chidera Ezeakor, Oyesade Oyetade, Obiageri Amaechi and Jessica Orji.
“(There is also) Jami Schlueter in the decathlon. Schlueter will be competing for Nigeria for the first time after recently switching his nationality from England. Teenage sensation Miracle Ezechukwu is also in the team,” Okowa reeled out with delight.
AFN’s media coordinator Dr. Kola Oredipe added in a press release that the contingent will feature in over 20 track and field events, among which are men’s and women’s 100m, 200m, and 400m; the women’s 100m hurdles as well as men’s 400m hurdles.
Sports247 reports further that the other events Team Nigeria will feature in are men’s, women’s and mixed 4x100m relays; mixed 4x400m relay; women’s high jump, long jump, triple jump, discus, hammer throw, men’s and women’s shot put, javelin and decathlon.
