USA international Folarin Balogun has paid an emotional tribute to his Nigerian heritage, revealing that his roots have played a defining role in shaping the mentality that has powered his rise on the international stage.

The AS Monaco striker, who was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Nigerian parents before growing up in England, said his background has instilled in him the resilience, ambition and determination needed to compete at the highest level.
“Coming from Nigeria turned me into a warrior. It has made me strong, given me hunger and desire, and it’s something I’m very proud of,” Balogun said.
Eligible to represent Nigeria, England or the United States, Balogun ultimately committed his international future to the USA and has become one of the country’s standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 24-year-old announced himself on the global stage by scoring twice in the United States’ opening victory over Paraguay before producing another outstanding display to earn the Superior Player of the Match award in his side’s 2-0 win over Australia.
His performances have been instrumental in helping Mauricio Pochettino’s team secure a place in the Round of 32, where they are set to face Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Despite sitting out the USA’s final group match against Turkey, Balogun remained encouraged by the team’s display even in defeat.
“The boys put in a good performance. It’s never easy when the team hasn’t played together regularly, but everyone gave their best. Now our full focus is on the Round of 32,” he added.
Balogun said the team’s objective remains clear as they prepare for the knockout stages, expressing confidence that the United States can continue its impressive World Cup campaign.
