The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, has paid glowing tribute to coaches across Nigeria and beyond, describing them as the silent architects behind the success of athletes, teams, and future champions.
In a special message to mark World Coaches Day, celebrated globally in recognition of the impact of coaches and mentors across sports and leadership development, the SSA praised coaches for their tireless commitment to nurturing talent, building discipline, and shaping lives beyond the field of play.

“Today, we celebrate the men and women who dedicate their lives to building others. Coaches do more than teach skills—they shape character, inspire confidence, and help young people believe in their dreams.”
Adeboye noted that coaches remain one of the most important pillars of grassroots sports development, stressing that many of Nigeria’s greatest athletes emerged because someone believed in them early enough to guide and mentor them.
“Behind every successful athlete, there is a coach who sacrificed time, energy, and knowledge to help them grow. Their impact goes far beyond trophies and medals.”
The SSA emphasized that coaching is not only about winning competitions, but about instilling values such as discipline, teamwork, resilience, and leadership.
“A great coach builds more than champions—he builds responsible individuals, leaders, and role models for society.”
Adeboye also acknowledged the sacrifices made by grassroots coaches who continue to work under difficult conditions while remaining committed to youth development and talent discovery.
“Many coaches work quietly without recognition, yet they continue to transform lives daily. Today is an opportunity to appreciate their dedication and invaluable contribution to national development.”
The SSA reaffirmed his office’s commitment to supporting initiatives that improve coaching education, welfare, and development across all levels of Nigerian sports.
“If we truly want to build a sustainable sports system, we must continue to invest in our coaches because they are the foundation of athlete development.”
