Nigeria’s NCAA sprint champion, Ajayi Kanyinsola, is set for one of the biggest races of his career when he lines up against an elite field in the men’s 100 metres at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic on July 4.

The Nigerian speedster heads into the Diamond League meeting in outstanding form after clocking a sensational personal best of 9.84 seconds, making him the second-fastest man in the world this season.
Only Jamaican star Oblique Seville, who tops the world rankings with 9.82 seconds, has run faster in 2026.
“This is the race every sprinter wants. Competing against the best in the world pushes you to become even better, and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” Ajayi said.
The highly anticipated race will feature an exceptional field that includes Seville, Olympic medallist Kenny Bednarek, Ackeem Blake, South Africa’s Gift Leotlela, former world champion Trayvon Bromell and Australian sprinter Lachlan Kennedy.
For Ajayi, the Prefontaine Classic presents another opportunity to confirm his status among the world’s elite after a remarkable breakthrough season.
“Every race is another opportunity to improve. My focus is to execute my race, keep progressing and continue making Nigeria proud,” he added.
With confidence soaring after his record-breaking performances this season, the Nigerian will be aiming to produce another impressive display as he continues preparations for the major championships later in the year.
