Vice President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Rachael Samuel, has revealed that 26 countries have already confirmed their participation in the 2026 Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championships scheduled to take place in Nigeria.

The tournament, which will run from August 9 to August 14, marks a significant milestone for Nigerian sport, with the country becoming only the second African nation to host the prestigious event.
“It’s a proud moment for Nigerian sports,” Samuel said.
According to the federation official, securing the hosting rights was a major achievement, particularly as Nigeria emerged victorious ahead of Australia during the bidding process.
“We competed against Australia and won the bid,” she added.
The successful bid means Nigeria joins South Africa as the only African countries to host a Commonwealth fencing championship.
South Africa previously hosted the junior edition of the competition in 2022.
Samuel described the development as a major boost for fencing in Nigeria and an opportunity to showcase the country’s ability to stage world-class sporting events.
The federation has already received confirmations from 26 countries, underlining the scale and importance of the championship.
The event is expected to bring some of the Commonwealth’s top fencers to Nigeria and further raise the profile of the sport across the country.
Preparations are already underway as organizers work towards delivering a successful championship that will place Nigeria firmly in the spotlight of international fencing.
The tournament is also expected to provide local athletes with a rare opportunity to compete against elite international opposition on home soil.
