Former Nigeria international Austin Popo has challenged retired footballers to become more involved in the administration of the game as the next Nigeria Football Federation elections draw closer.

Popo believes former players have spent too much time criticizing decisions from outside instead of actively seeking positions where they can influence change.
“It’s time for ex-internationals to get involved,” Popo said.
The former international argued that former players possess valuable experience and understanding of the game that could benefit Nigerian football at the administrative level.
According to Popo, meaningful reforms can only happen when former professionals participate directly in the decision-making process.
“We cannot keep sitting on the sidelines and complaining,” he added.
The ex-Super Eagles star stressed that footballers who have represented the country understand many of the challenges facing the sport and are well placed to contribute solutions.
Popo noted that key administrative positions provide opportunities to influence policies and drive positive change within Nigerian football.
“If we want things to improve, we have to be part of the process,” he stated.
His comments come ahead of the NFF elective congress, where discussions about the future direction of Nigerian football are expected to intensify.
Popo believes the time has come for former players to take greater responsibility for the future of the sport by seeking leadership positions within football administration.
The former international maintained that active participation, rather than criticism from afar, remains the best path toward meaningful progress in Nigerian football.
