Senegal have once again etched their name into African football history after defeating Tanzania 4-2 on penalties to lift the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations title following a thrilling 1-1 draw in regulation time in Morocco.

Sports247 reports that the final lived up to expectations as both teams produced an entertaining contest worthy of the occasion. Senegal struck first through Ibrahim Dione in the seventh minute, giving the defending champions an early advantage and setting the tone for a highly competitive encounter.
Tanzania, however, refused to back down and gradually grew into the match. Their persistence paid off in the 64th minute when Hamis Chenga found the equaliser, sending the East African side into celebration and ensuring the final remained finely poised until the closing whistle.
With neither side able to find a winner in normal time, the championship was ultimately decided through a penalty shootout.
Senegal held their nerve from the spot, converting all four of their penalties, while Tanzania missed two crucial efforts as the West Africans emerged 4-2 winners.
The victory secured Senegal’s second U-17 AFCON title and further cemented the country’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading football development nations.
Remarkably, they once again lifted the trophy on Moroccan soil, adding another memorable chapter to their growing youth football success story.
Despite falling short in the final, Tanzania enjoyed a historic tournament and left Morocco with plenty of pride. Their impressive run earned them the silver medal, while Egypt secured third place after defeating hosts Morocco 2-0 in the bronze-medal match.
Several individual awards highlighted outstanding performances throughout the competition. Tanzania’s Issa Chole was named Player of the Tournament, while teammate Athanas Dismas claimed the Golden Boot after finishing as the tournament’s leading scorer with three goals.
Senegal goalkeeper Assane Sarr received the Golden Glove award for his excellent displays between the posts, while Tanzania were recognized as the tournament’s Fair Play Team.
In addition to the trophy, Senegal received the winners’ prize of $170,000, while runners-up Tanzania earned $90,000. The semi-finalists received $60,000 each, with quarter-finalists taking home $50,000.
