Rangers head coach Danny Rohl dismissed speculation over his future at the weekend, but this topic will not go away anytime soon.
Three consecutive defeats have knocked the Ibrox club out of contention for the Premiership title, with Sunday’s Old Firm loss the final nail in the coffin of Rangers’ season. It will go down as a dire campaign.
The damage was done early on during Russell Martin’s disastrous spell in charge. Rohl managed to turn things around after replacing the former Scotland international, but it ultimately wasn’t enough.
At the weekend, reports emerged that the German was “under pressure” and that his future beyond this season wasn’t entirely set in stone yet. Rohl, however, dismissed the speculation and insisted that, from his point of view, there is no reason to think that he won’t be at Rangers next term.
The loss to Celtic will only have added to the “pressure,” though it is difficult to imagine that the 37-year-old is fighting for his job. The fact that Rangers were even in contention for the title until the weekend was a major achievement given their poor start to the season.
Danny Rohl: Sacked or poached?
Indeed, according to Sky Germany, Rohl is not at risk of being sacked, but he could nevertheless be on the move if certain pieces fall into place. Despite Rangers’ recent slump, it is stated that the young manager has enhanced his reputation in recent months after “causing a stir” in Scotland.
The outlet confirms that Wolfsburg are seriously considering Rohl in their search for a new head coach, though it seems doubtful that he would be willing to leave Rangers for a club that could be playing in the 2. Bundesliga next season.
More worringly perhaps will be the interest from two other clubs: Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin. The latter are looking for a long-term replacement for Steffen Baumgart. History-maker Marie-Louise Eta is currently in interim charge, but the original plan for her to take over Union’s women’s team next season remains in place.
The interest from Union seems as serious as Wolfsburg’s. With Leverkusen, things are not quite as advanced. They have a “latent” interest in Rohl, but it doesn’t seem like he is a genuine option to replace Kasper Hjulmand just yet.
Both Leverkusen and Union could be very interesting jobs for Rohl, though. The former are a financially strong club and are still looking for their next Xabi Alonso. They will likely play in the Europa League next term.
As for Union, the attraction would be more on a human level, as a move to Berlin would allow him to be closer to his hometown of Zwickau in western Saxony.
Additionally, Rohl is also fielding interest from clubs in other European countries. The 37-year-old will clearly be a man in demand this summer.
