Nigeria’s medal haul at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra received a major boost on Wednesday as Tobi Amusan stormed to gold in the women’s 100m hurdles final, while compatriot Adaobi Tabugbo clinched bronze to complete a memorable outing for Team Nigeria.
The reigning world record holder delivered a commanding performance in the final to secure Nigeria’s first gold medal of the championships, reaffirming her dominance on the continent after earlier qualifying fastest from the heats with a time of 12.82 seconds.

Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller denied Nigeria a clean sweep of the top two positions by taking the silver medal, while Tabugbo impressed strongly to claim her first senior individual international medal for Nigeria.
The final, however, was briefly overshadowed by technical difficulties at the stadium as the timing system malfunctioned, leading to delays in the release of official race times by organisers.
Amusan’s triumph marks a successful return to continental competition for the Nigerian star and further underlines her status as one of Africa’s finest track athletes. Her victory also continued Nigeria’s strong showing in Accra, with the country increasing its track and field medal tally during the opening stages of the championships.
Earlier in the competition, Team Nigeria had already opened its medal account in the women’s discus event, while several other athletes advanced to finals in sprint and field events.
Attention later shifts to the women’s 100m final, where Rosemary Chukwuma is among the Nigerian athletes expected to challenge for podium positions as Team Nigeria continues its quest for more medals in Ghana.
