Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has broken his silence on transfer rumours linking him away from the St James’ Park side.
Tonali is one of several Newcastle players who has been linked with a move away from the Premier League giants this season, joining Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Tino Livramento as a superstar regularly found among the transfer headlines.
Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea have been linked with the 25-year-old star, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €61.1 million.
Tonali reacts to transfer rumours
Tonali, who has been subject to rumours that he is homesick and open to a move back to Serie A, claims that the transfer chatter is simply a reward for his strong performances and that it is something that he’s learned to ignore.
“In football if you play well you have to deal with the rumours, but if you concentrate 100 per cent on your game, and you’re happy, you don’t have to think about anything or speak about anything,” he told Sky Sports.
“I don’t look at my social media. I don’t like it. After my ban I changed everything with social media, I just go to training and then go home and be with my family. My life is much better now.”
Newcastle forced into summer sales
Newcastle’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) situation means that the St James’ Park side expect to sell two leading players this summer, according to FootballTransfers’ sources.
Gordon is currently one of the frontrunners to leave, given that he is exploring the possibility of departing the club. Rumours linking Tonali with a switch away, though, have been more persistent.
Unlike Cole Palmer, who emphatically shut down claims that he could leave Chelsea to sign for Manchester United, Tonali notably did not offer a concrete commitment to Newcastle beyond the end of the season.
Newcastle reportedly want the situation resolved quickly, but their asking price of around €115m is likely to put suitors off, given that figure is nearly twice Tonali’s ETV.
