NFL insider claims Dallas Cowboys could ditch Dak Prescott as Jerry Jones weighs up major changes with season hanging by a thread

A bombshell report has claimed the Dallas Cowboys may be ready to move on from Dak Prescott as Jerry Jones searches for a way to turn the team’s fortunes around.

The Cowboys slipped to 3-5 for the season on Sunday after a sobering 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals led to an inquest into the team’s failings.

While a huge amount of pressure now sits on the shoulders of head coach Brian Schottenheimer, an NFL insider has claimed Prescott could be on the chopping block too.

Speaking on ‘Give Me The Headlines’, NBC insider Chris Simms said: ‘There’s been some murmurs that in Dallas that they’re a little bit like at the end of their rope with Dak Prescott.

‘Like it’s like things better turn around or he ain’t gonna be the quarterback there next year. We’ll see. We’ll see. But that’s disappointing,’

A woeful defense has been to blame for the majority of Dallas’ losses this season and Prescott and the offense have largely been consistent through their first eight games.

Prescott has played in all eight games so far, throwing for 2,046 yards and 14 touchdowns with five interceptions.

The 33-year-old was drafted by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft and he replaced Tony Romo as the starter almost immediately.

But in his 10 seasons in Dallas, the Cowboys have only made the playoffs five times and they have never progressed past the divisional round. Prescott’s playoff record is two wins and five losses.

Uncertainty around Prescott’s future comes at a time of huge introspection for Jones and the future of the Cowboys as they again failed to put together consecutive victories.

The latest loss was the most crushing of Schottenheimer’s season-plus in charge, since the Cowboys matched the biggest blown fourth-quarter lead in franchise history at 14 points in Arizona’s 33-30 overtime victory.

Questions about Schottenheimer’s job security had already come up this season. Now, they’ve lost to backup quarterbacks twice – Gardner Minshew’s huge rally for the Cardinals coming after the previous home loss was against undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels for then-winless Tampa Bay in his second career start.

The Cowboys have had a winning record after just one of 25 weeks under Schottenheimer, whose only winning streak was a three-game run last November.

‘I will say that a lot of people let Brian down today,’ Jones said when asked why he still had confidence in his ninth head coach in 37 years as owner and general manager. ‘And so for whatever criticism we want to have of Brian, we can all get in line.’

Prescott is among those who let the coach down with a supposedly high-powered offense that has sputtered in all three losses during the current four-game stretch. The 11th-year starter bristled when asked about Schottenheimer after the game.

‘Don’t put the blame on one person,’ Prescott said. ‘I think that’s weak. I think that’s cowardly. This game is about all 11 that touch the field and every person that has a part in it, coaches and support staff.

‘It’s never just one person’s fault. Even if I go out there and throw a bunch of interceptions, it’s never just truly one person’s fault.’
