Liverpool’s desire to strengthen their midfield is well established, and the Anfield club have been given a major transfer update on the future of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, who features on their shortlist.
Nmecha, 26, has been one of the leading midfielders in the Bundesliga early in the season, and Sky Sports Deutschland reports this has prompted transfer interest from Liverpool.
The Anfield club have contacted the player’s representatives to sound out the potential for a move, though it is stressed that no immediate bid is likely.
Instead, Nmecha is seen as a backup option to Lamine Camara of Monaco and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.
It is clear, though, that Nmecha, who is under contract until 2030, is on their radar.
Why do Liverpool want to sign Nmecha?
Liverpool are poised to overhaul their midfield in 2027, with the future of even Alexis Mac Allister up in the air, despite the Argentine being their ‘best performer’ so far this season.
Nmecha is one of the player on their shortlist to replace him after a strong start to the season.
He is a box-to-box player whose has the ability to impact the game at both ends of the park. A former Manchester City youth, he excelled for Dortmund last season in terms of pressing and tactical awareness, and carried an attacking threat as he delivered five goals and three assists across 39 appearances in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
Bundesliga expert Ronan Murphy told FootballTransfers: “Felix Nmecha is a versatile midfielder who would fit many clubs. It is no surprise Liverpool are interested as they have long been admirers of midfielders who can perform multiple roles.
“He is usually a box-to-box player at Borussia Dortmund because of his all-round ability on the ball, looking to move the play forward through ball carrying and precise passing.
“The defensive side of his game is also strong as he is a hard worker who will get back to help the defence. This versatility is also perhaps why he is not considered one of the world’s best midfielders as he has yet to carve out a proper role for himself or become dominant at any one thing.
“Niko Kovac’s defensive approach at Dortmund could also be stifling his creativity and drive forward, and this is something we could see under a different coach or at a different club, like Liverpool.”
Nmecha’s ‘Instagram clause’ revealed
Nmecha, meanwhile, has also courted controversy in the past due to his social media activities, which prompted Dortmund to reserve a right to veto any of his posts, according to Sport Bild.
Indeed, BVB fans protested against his signing in 2023 after he shared and likely homophobic and transphobic posts, prompting Dortmund to install an ‘Instagram clause’ into his contract that could see him receive a fine of up to €1m if he violated the club’s values and beliefs, according to Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung.
The player has denied that he is homophobic or transphobic, claiming “a few things have been taken out of context”. He added: “I am a Christian, of course, but I love all people. I don’t discriminate. I hope the fans will give me the chance to get to know each other and see that I am, hopefully, a great person.”
