Nigeria’s cricket teams have made a strong start to the Nigeria Cricket Federation Quadrangular T20 Series, beating Ghana and Sierra Leone.
The senior national team, the Yellow Greens, defeated Ghana by eight wickets at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos on Monday, while Nigeria A beat Sierra Leone by 33 runs.
The results come as the Nigeria Cricket Federation continues efforts to strengthen the sport and provide more opportunities for players within the country.
The Quadrangular Series features Nigeria, Nigeria A, Ghana and Sierra Leone, with the competition also serving as preparation for Nigeria’s upcoming international commitments, including the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier.
Nigeria is scheduled to host the qualifier in October, giving the Yellow Greens an important opportunity to prepare on home soil.
But despite the recent results, cricket continues to receive far less attention in Nigeria than football and some other major sports.
The situation raises an important question: if Nigeria has teams capable of winning international matches, why isn’t more attention being given to the sport?
The answer may go beyond results.
For cricket to attract a wider following, more Nigerians need to know the players, understand the competitions and have regular opportunities to watch and follow the teams.
The federation has also been developing the sport at different levels, with Nigeria A providing opportunities for emerging players alongside established national-team members.
The Yellow Greens have started the latest campaign with a win, while Nigeria A have also made their mark.
The results are there.
The next challenge is getting more Nigerians to pay attention.
