Doma United suffered their first defeat of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season on Sunday, losing 4-1 to Kano Pillars.

Yet, despite conceding four goals, the promoted side are still sitting at the top of the NPFL table.
So, how did that happen?
The answer lies in what Doma United did before their trip to Kano.
The Gombe-based club had won their opening three matches of the season, collecting nine points from nine before facing Kano Pillars.
They began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Sporting Lagos before beating Inter Lagos 1-0 away from home. They then added another 2-0 win against Enyimba to maintain their perfect start.
The three results put them firmly at the top of the table.
Kano Pillars brought that winning run to an end in emphatic fashion.
But while the defeat affected Doma United’s goal difference, it did not take away the nine points they had already earned.
That is why they remain top of the standings after four matches, with nine points. Barau FC are second on eight points, while Kano Pillars moved into third with seven points.
For Doma United, the focus will now be on how they respond.
Their next opportunity comes on Wednesday when they host Plateau United at the Pantami Stadium.
Another victory would give the newly promoted side a chance to strengthen their position at the top and put Sunday’s heavy defeat behind them.
The 4-1 scoreline may have grabbed attention, but after four matches, Doma United’s three wins still count for more on the league table than one defeat.
And that is exactly why they are still the team everyone has to catch.
