Former Super Falcons striker Desire Oparanozie has expressed deep disappointment following Nigeria’s 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, admitting that her biggest concern was the team’s failure to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s defeat in Casablanca ended the defending champions’ hopes of retaining their continental crown and means they must now navigate the play-off route to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Oparanozie, who was particularly concerned about Nigeria’s World Cup qualification prospects, admitted that the result left her heartbroken.
“I’m really disappointed and heartbroken. My main priority was the World Cup ticket, and now we have to fight for it through the play-offs,” Oparanozie said.
The former international stressed the significance of Nigeria’s World Cup record, noting that failure to qualify for Brazil 2027 would represent an unprecedented setback for the Super Falcons.
Nigeria have appeared at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the tournament’s inception in 1991, making qualification one of the immediate priorities following the WAFCON disappointment.
Oparanozie believes the Super Falcons must quickly recover from the Cameroon defeat and focus on the opportunity that remains.
The quarter-final loss came despite Nigeria controlling significant portions of the match and creating several opportunities. Cameroon, however, held firm after Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen’s 19th-minute free-kick gave the Indomitable Lionesses the lead.
Nigeria will now face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana on Thursday, August 13, in the CAF play-off, with the winner continuing along the route to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Play-Off Tournament.
For Oparanozie, the message is clear: the disappointment of losing the WAFCON quarter-final must now be put aside as Nigeria faces another decisive test.
“It is painful, but we have to move on. The World Cup is still within reach, and everyone has to give everything to make sure Nigeria qualifies,” she added.
With their historic World Cup record now under serious threat, the Super Falcons cannot afford another setback when they meet South Africa in what promises to be another high-stakes encounter.
