Nigeria’s Super Falcons will battle South Africa’s Banyana Banyana on Thursday for a place in the Intercontinental playoff for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Brazil.
The encounter will determine one of Africa’s two teams that will advance to the playoffs for next year’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Super Falcons found themselves in the playoff after missing out on automatic qualification, which was reserved for the four semifinalists at the ongoing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Nigeria suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the quarter-final, while South Africa also missed out on a place in the last four after going down 2-1 to Morocco, setting up another high-stakes meeting between two of African women’s football’s biggest rivals.
The Super Falcons have featured at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the inaugural tournament in 1991, and defeat against Banyana Banyana would put that proud record in serious danger.
Nigeria will therefore be desperate to overcome their familiar rivals and move a step closer to maintaining their ever-present status at the global showpiece.
The 10-time African champions can also draw confidence from their recent record against South Africa in major qualifying encounters.
Nigeria denied Banyana Banyana a place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after edging the South Africans 1-0 on aggregate in the final round of the African qualifiers.
The Super Falcons also got the better of South Africa in the semifinal of WAFCON 2024, strengthening their recent dominance in decisive meetings between the two sides.
However, Thursday’s encounter is expected to provide another stern examination for the Justine Madugu’s side , with South Africa also determined to remain in contention for a place at Brazil 2027.
Banyana Banyana have developed into one of the continent’s strongest women’s teams in recent years and will be eager to avenge their recent setbacks against the Super Falcons.
With a place in the Intercontinental playoffs at stake, there will be little room for error when the two African heavyweights clash.
