Commonwealth Games 2026 men’s 200m silver medalist, Udodi Onwuzurike has turned his attention towards next year’s World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China, where the 23-year-old sprinter believes he can enaact a better time than his season’s best of 20.09 seconds.
Sports247 reports that, while his season best was good enough to clinch silver in Glasgow, Onwuzurike reckoned that he can do better, as he admittted that an injury he copped earlier in the year slowed him down with stunted preparations, but he is now heading into his best form.
Having earlier hit 20.18s at the Gyulai István Memorial in Budapest, Hungary, Onwuzurike noted that he achieved an improvement in Glasgow, despite running in Lane 8, but further acknowledged that his personal best of 19.76 is the benchmark he is now thinking of beating in Beijing.
He finished behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who took gold with 19.96, while Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor (20.11) won bronze, both of whom Onwuzurike believes he can beat on a better day, while also setting his mind on making better marks in the 100m.
“It feels so good to win a medal here, despite the injury that slowed me down. I really must admit that turning professional has not been easy for me, but it’s all good. Whether you are running from lane 2 or 5, it is all the same distance.
“The most important thing is to concentrate and focus on your race. I don’t think I have been able to run at the speed that I want because of the injuries that I had. So, I still have a lot of work to do for me to get to where I want to be. I am not where I want to be right now.
“I don’t want to downplay winning silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. I will return home to Florida, rest for a while and kick off my preparations for the World Championship,” Onwuzurike projected expectantly.
Sports247 reports further that the next outdoor global championship will take place from September 11th to 19th, 2027, at Beijing National Stadium, but Udodi is already thinking ahead, with a view that he can hit peak form there, if he starts planning early for it.
