Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala has assured Nigerians that the team will recover from their disappointing opening defeat to Malawi at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The defending champions suffered a shock 3-2 loss to the Scorchers in their Group C opener at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday night, ending their unbeaten start to the title defence.
Malawi produced a spirited display to claim a famous victory, with Temwa Chawinga scoring twice, while captain Tabitha Chawinga also found the back of the net.
Nigeria got their goals through captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who converted a penalty, and substitute Uchenna Kanu.
Reacting to the setback, Oshoala apologised to Nigerians for the result and admitted the team fell below expectations.
The experienced striker, however, insisted the Super Falcons remain fully focused on turning their campaign around in the remaining group matches.
“Smaller nations are closing the gap, but it’s also a wake-up call for Nigeria. We have to understand that other teams want to win this trophy as well,” Oshoala told reporters after the game.
“It’s still a long competition, and all we need to do is prepare well for the next game.
“We are sorry for losing the opening game to Malawi.”
The Super Falcons will now shift attention to their next Group C game against the Copper Queens of Zambia.
Oshoala called on their supporters to rally behind the team ahead of the crucial encounter.
“We need the support of all Nigerians right now. A World Cup ticket is at stake, to be honest. This is the time we really need everyone to support the Super Falcons,” Oshoala added.
