Former Rivers Angels head coach, Tosan Blankson, has outlined the factors he believes led to the Super Falcons’ shocking 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in Tuesday’s opening match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Completesports.com reports.
Blankson said the Super Falcons underestimated the Scorchers of Malawi and were overly distracted by activities on social media before the game.
Super Falcons Underestimated Malawi, Says Blankson
“This is the kind of result you get when you underestimate your opponent and choose to play on social media rather than focus and concentrate on the game at hand,” Blankson began.

“There are no minnows in football any longer. The game is evolving rapidly everywhere. Take the case of Cape Verde at the 2026 World Cup, for example.
“So, I think the Super Falcons were not focused. They lacked concentration and were shocked by Malawi.”
Blankson Believes Super Falcons Can Still Recover
Despite the disappointing defeat, Blankson insisted that the Falcons still have every chance of winning the tournament.
“On the way to your destination, there are bound to be bumps. You have to overcome those bumps if you are to reach your destination, which is the trophy,” Blankson told Completesports.com.

“The Super Falcons’ eyes have now been opened. They must adjust their focus and concentration in the remaining games.
Destination Remains The Trophy
“What’s most important is the destination—the trophy—which I believe they can still win because the talent and quality are there.
“Once they put this setback behind them and focus on the remaining games, I believe they can still achieve their objective.”
Up next for the Super Falcons is their Group C matchay 2 clash with the Copper Queens of Zambia on Saturday, 1 August at Al Madina Stadium Rabat. They will face Egypt in their last group match on Wednesday, 5 August at the Olympic Stadium Rabat.
