As Team Nigeria continues its impressive campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has attributed the country’s outstanding performances to a renewed focus on athletes’ welfare and purposeful leadership following the restoration of the Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking in Glasgow, Scotland, on Tuesday, the Special Assistant on Media to the Director General of the NSC, Mr. Kola Daniel said the transformation in Nigerian sports is no coincidence but the result of deliberate reforms that have placed athletes at the heart of the country’s sporting agenda.

Nigeria has already amassed six gold and four silver medals, with weightlifting leading the charge, while the athletics team continues to produce encouraging performances and the women’s wheelchair basketball team has reached the quarterfinals for the first time in the country’s history.
According to Daniel, the leadership of the NSC, under Chairman Malam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, has created an environment where athletes can perform with confidence through innovative welfare policies.
He identified the Commission’s instant cash reward initiative, which sees medal winners receive their financial rewards immediately after stepping off the podium, as one of the biggest morale boosters for Team Nigeria in Glasgow.
Daniel also highlighted the Commission’s training grant policy, describing it as another major intervention that has enabled athletes to prepare adequately for international competitions.
“The leadership style of the Commission has inspired confidence among the athletes. They now compete believing that no goal is beyond their reach,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the ongoing reforms would continue to deliver long-term success for Nigerian sports, insisting that the foundation being laid today would benefit future generations of athletes.
Daniel further praised President Tinubu for restoring the National Sports Commission and supporting reforms aimed at repositioning Nigerian sports on the global stage.
Looking beyond the Commonwealth Games, he said attention would soon shift to the Super Falcons, expressing optimism that Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team would also enjoy success as they chase a record-extending 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
With Team Nigeria continuing to deliver medals across multiple sports in Glasgow, the Commission believes its athlete-first approach is paying dividends—and the signs suggest the country’s sporting resurgence is only just beginning.
