Super Falcons midfielder Toni Payne has admitted that representing Nigeria comes with enormous pressure but insists the team’s focus remains firmly on defending its Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title and securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria opens its campaign against tournament debutants Malawi, with the record 10-time African champions seeking a winning start in their quest for an unprecedented 11th continental crown.

Speaking ahead of the Group C opener, Payne acknowledged the weight of expectation that follows the Super Falcons wherever they play.
“Playing for the Super Falcons comes with pressure because everyone expects us to win every game. That’s part of representing Nigeria, and we embrace that responsibility,” Payne said.
The former Everton Women midfielder stressed that despite the expectations, the players remain fully focused on the task ahead and are determined to achieve their objectives in Morocco.
“Our goal is to qualify for the World Cup and defend our WAFCON title. We know what is expected of us, and every player is ready to make history once again,” she added.
Payne also highlighted the remarkable growth of women’s football across Africa, describing the continent’s game as exciting, competitive and full of quality. She believes the 2026 tournament will once again showcase the rapid development of the women’s game, while warning that every opponent will be eager to dethrone the defending champions.
The midfielder recalled that lifting the previous WAFCON trophy was a career-defining moment, particularly because it marked the first continental title for many members of the current Super Falcons squad. She believes that success has only increased the team’s hunger for more silverware.
Nigeria heads into the tournament as one of the favourites alongside hosts Morocco, South Africa and Zambia, with qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup also at stake.
The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to Malawi, aiming to begin their title defence with three points as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending 11th WAFCON title and another appearance on football’s biggest stage.
