Team Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia delivered a superb performance to win the gold medal in the men’s 71kg weightlifting event at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Completesports.com reports.
His triumph secured Nigeria’s fourth gold medal of the Games and the country’s second medal in weightlifting, following Ruth Asuquo Nyong’s silver-medal finish in the women’s 48kg event on Sunday.

Umoafia dominated from the outset, lifting 147kg in the snatch before matching the best clean and jerk lift of 172kg to finish with a winning total of 319kg.
Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi claimed the silver medal with a combined lift of 314kg, while Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses took bronze after recording a total of 310kg.
Umoafia’s victory takes Team Nigeria’s overall medal tally at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games to eight medals — four gold and four silver — further strengthening the country’s impressive start to the competition.
