Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia has expressed his gratitude to the team for their unwavering effort throughout the match, following Argentina’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final in New Jersey.
The AFA president took to social media to express pride in the players, coaching staff, and everyone involved.

Despite the heartbreak of losing in extra time, Tapia praised the squad for “representing an entire country with heart” and allowing the nation to dream again.
Ferran Torres scored an extra-time goal to secure Spain’s victory in the match, ultimately ending Lionel Messi’s title defense.
“Standing tall, Argentina, with your head held high. Simply thank you for giving everything from start to finish, for representing an entire country with heart, and for allowing us to dream again.
“Proud of this squad, of the coaching staff, of the collaborators, and of all the people,” he said on X.

Substitute Ferran Torres emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the second period of extra time to hand La Roja their second World Cup title, 16 years after their maiden triumph in South Africa in 2010.
Spain is now unbeaten in its last 38 matches, 29 wins, nine draws, and is the outright holder of the longest such streak by any European men’s team ever. Italy went 37 matches (28 wins, nine draws) from October 2018 through September 2021, before Spain ended that streak.
