Police and fire crews are working to tackle the fire which is threatening to spread towards the runway at Palma de Mallorca Airport after locals reported hearing several loud explosions
Flames have erupted near Majorca’s main airport with loud explosions heard as smoke billows above the runway.
Palma de Mallorca Airport has been put on “pre-alert” due to the fire being so near, potentially causing disruption to flights to and from the major holiday hotspot beloved by Brits.
Images show thick black smoke rising over the airport visible for miles around as residents in the path of the plume have reportedly been told to stay inside their homes.
The National Police have arrived at the scene alongside the Palma Fire Brigade, who are already working to tackle the flames. Two firefighters have been treated for smoke inhalation, from the blaze which has spread to the Mallorca Daily Bulletin reported.
The blaze is thought to have begun inside the Mercapalma main food storage plant before spreading to parked vehicles which have also caught alight, the parked cars are said to be hard to extinguish “as there is so much fuel at the site,” the outlet reported.
The Flightradar website shows 257 flights are currently delayed at Palma de Mallorca Airport but nothing about the fire has been posted on the airport’s website or social media.
A spokesperson for Aena, the company that operates Palma de Mallorca Airport told the Mirror: “At the moment it is not affecting operations.”
