According to local reporting, the fire is proving difficult to bring under control because of the large amount of fuel at the site. The tyres of the affected vehicles have reportedly exploded, with fuel tanks posing an additional hazard for emergency crews.
Firefighters are tackling the blaze from both ground level and above using aerial ladder platforms, with their main priority preventing the flames from spreading to the industrial warehouses within the Mercapalma complex.
Given the scale of the incident, firefighters have also established a command centre inside Mercapalma, next to a supermarket, to coordinate operations and determine the most effective strategy for bringing the large-scale fire under control.
