Nigia’s new men’s 100m champion, Favour Ashe as well as female quarter-miler, Patience George-Okon and para-powerlifter, Folashade Oluwafemiayo were among 54 early arrivals at the country’s pre-Commonwealth Games training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Sports247 gathered that the athletes, coaches and officials were all received on arrival by the director-general of National Sports Commission (NSC), Honourable Bukola Olopade, who expresed satisfaction with the quality of facilities on ground at the team’s camp.

Olopade also revealed his delight with the zeal, sense of committment, togetherness and determination to excel that he saw among all the 54 athletes on their arrival in Aberdeen, where he disclosed that more members of the contingent were expected to troop in on Saturday and Sunday.
The NSC’s DG also stated with affirmation that the athletes have received adequate preprations ahead of the Games, which hold from July 23rd to August 2nd, hence his verdict that Team Nigeria will return home with a haul of gold medals and surpass their placement as Africa’s best contingent at the last edition in 2022.
He disclosed with a post on X, “I arrived at our pre-Commonwealth Games training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland to personally receive our athletes, coaches and officials; as Team Nigeria begins the final phase of preparations for Glasgow 2026.
“Seeing our contingent arrive with so much determination and confidence reminds me why preparation remains the foundation of success. From inspecting the facilities to welcoming our athletes, I am satisfied that we have created the right environment for them to train and compete at their very best.
“The atmosphere in Aberdeen is excellent, the facilities are first-class, and the team is in high spirits. Over the next three weeks, every training session, every recovery period and every detail will count, as we prepare to proudly represent our nation at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.”
Sports247 reports further that Olopade also disclosed that the focus of everyone connected to the team will now be totally on how to eliminate every avoidable distraction, while providing world-class support, so that the athletes and coaches can concentrate on winning medals for Nigeria.
