Former Manchester United star Bastian Schweinsteiger has backed Jürgen Klopp to replace Julian Nagelsmann as the manager of the German national team following Germany’s shock Round-of-32 exit to Paraguay at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Following the historic penalty shootout loss, Schweinsteiger voiced his confidence that a managerial change is imminent, noting that Klopp would bring much-needed authority and a sense of new optimism to a federation in turmoil.

Nagelsmann faces intense scrutiny despite his contract running through 2028, following Germany’s premature elimination.
The former Germany midfielder believes Klopp is the right man to fix the team’s identity and navigate the pressure ahead of the upcoming European Championship.
“I believe that it will happen,” Schweinsteiger told ARD.
“Of course, nothing is certain yet. But I have a feeling that it will likely happen that way.”
Schweinsteiger then gave Klopp his backing: “If Jurgen Klopp were to become national coach, he would also bring such a power base with him.
“The DFB is already in a state of emergency, and I have the feeling that it will happen.”

“After an exit like that, it is always the case that you have to talk about the coach,” Schweinsteiger added.
“I believe that Jurgen Klopp is a great coach and that he can create a sense of new optimism. I think that would be very important with a view to the European Championship.”
