Former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has tipped Morocco to emerge as Africa’s standout nation at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, insisting the Atlas Lions have what it takes to challenge the world’s best once again.
Rohr, who has managed both Nigeria and Benin Republic, said Morocco has been the most impressive African team at the tournament, citing their quality, tactical discipline and experience at the highest level.
The German tactician also believes African football has justified FIFA’s decision to expand the continent’s World Cup allocation from five to ten places under the new tournament format.
“Morocco has impressed me the most. They have shown the quality, organisation and confidence needed to go very far in this competition,” Rohr said.
The former Super Eagles coach noted that Africa’s overall performance at the tournament reflects the rapid progress of football across the continent, with several nations proving they can compete against the world’s elite.
He added that the increased number of qualification slots has provided more African countries with the opportunity to showcase their development on football’s biggest stage.
“The expansion to ten places has been justified. African football is improving, and the performances at this World Cup have shown that clearly,” he added.
Rohr believes Morocco’s blend of experienced internationals and emerging stars gives them a genuine opportunity to make another deep run, following their historic semi-final appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
He expressed optimism that Africa’s impressive performances at the tournament will inspire greater investment in coaching, youth development and football infrastructure across the continent, helping more nations compete consistently at the highest level.
