Former Nigeria international Gbenga Okunowo has called for improved player welfare and better football administration across Africa, saying poor governance continues to hinder the continent’s progress.

The former Super Eagles defender expressed concern over the recurring issues of delayed payments and financial disputes involving national teams, noting that such challenges continue to affect several African countries.
“Players deserve better welfare. Representing your country should never come with uncertainty over payments and other basic entitlements,” Okunowo said.
Drawing comparisons with recent situations involving Nigeria and Senegal, Okunowo argued that administrative shortcomings continue to overshadow the achievements of African football despite increased investment and financial support from FIFA.
He stressed that players who sacrifice for their countries deserve to receive their allowances and bonuses promptly.
“These issues have persisted for too long. We cannot continue talking about developing African football while basic administrative responsibilities are neglected,” he added.
Okunowo maintained that improving governance and accountability would not only boost players’ confidence but also enhance the continent’s competitiveness on the global stage.
The former international urged football administrators across Africa to prioritise professionalism, transparency and player welfare, insisting that sustainable success can only be achieved through strong leadership and efficient management.
