Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has called on Nigerians to put the disappointment of missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup behind them and focus on rebuilding for the future.

Shorunmu believes continuing to dwell on the failed qualification campaign will not change the outcome, insisting that attention should now shift towards correcting past mistakes and preparing adequately for future tournaments.
“It’s time to move forward. The World Cup has come and gone, and talking about it repeatedly won’t change anything. We have to focus on getting better,” Shorunmu said.
The former international urged the Nigeria Football Federation and the players to begin laying the foundation for a stronger national team capable of competing consistently at the highest level.
He also expressed confidence that many members of the current Super Eagles squad can still feature at the next FIFA World Cup if they remain disciplined and maintain high professional standards.
“Some players people consider old are still performing brilliantly at this World Cup. If our players take good care of themselves and remain professional, many of them can still be there next time,” he added.
Shorunmu stressed that the lessons from Nigeria’s failure to qualify must not be ignored, noting that improved planning, better preparation and greater commitment will be essential if the Super Eagles are to avoid another disappointing campaign.
The former goalkeeper concluded by urging everyone connected with Nigerian football to work together towards restoring the country’s place among the world’s leading football nations.
