The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, has congratulated Ikorodu City FC on their historic qualification for the final of the 2026 President Federation Cup, describing the achievement as a major victory for grassroots football development in Nigeria.
Ikorodu City booked their place in the final after defeating Nasarawa United FC 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time in a thrilling semi-final encounter.
The qualification caps a remarkable season for the Lagos-based club, which also finished an impressive 4th position in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign, further establishing itself as one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising football clubs.
Reacting to the achievement, Hon. Adeboye praised the management, coaching crew, players, and supporters of the club for their dedication, resilience, and commitment throughout the season.
“I congratulate Ikorodu City FC on this historic achievement. Qualifying for the President Federation Cup final while also recording an impressive fourth-place finish in the NPFL is a testament to the hard work, discipline, and vision that have driven the club’s growth.”
The SSA noted that the club’s success story serves as a shining example of what can be achieved through proper investment in grassroots football development and youth empowerment.
“Ikorodu City FC represents the type of success story we want to see across Nigeria. Their journey demonstrates the immense potential that exists within our grassroots sports ecosystem when young talents are given the right opportunities, structure, and support.”
Hon. Adeboye further stated that the club’s achievements should inspire young footballers across the country to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to pursuing their dreams.
“Their rise from grassroots football to competing for major honours on the national stage should inspire thousands of young Nigerians.
This is why grassroots sports development remains a key priority under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.”
The SSA also commended Nasarawa United FC for their spirited performance throughout the competition and praised both teams for contributing to the continued growth and competitiveness of Nigerian football.
Ikorodu City FC will now face El-Kanemi Warriors FC in the 2026 President Federation Cup Final, scheduled to take place on June 27, 2026, in Asaba, Delta State.
Hon. Adeboye expressed confidence that the final would be a fitting celebration of Nigerian football and wished both teams success.
