Manchester United have approached West Ham over a deal for Crysencio Summerville as Michael Carrick looks to reshape his squad
Manchester United are believed to have made contact with West Ham over Crysencio Summerville. The links come as the Red Devils press ahead with their squad overhaul under Michael Carrick.
United’s primary focus in the transfer market is midfield, with a deal to bring Ederson to Old Trafford from Atalanta already confirmed and funds available for further reinforcements. At least one additional central midfielder is anticipated to follow the Brazilian through the doors at Old Trafford, with Summerville’s West Ham team-mate Mateus Fernandes emerging as a prime target.
Negotiations with Fernandes’ agent are already under way, and the midfielder is widely expected to depart the London Stadium in the wake of the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League. The 21 year old is reportedly eager to make the switch and, as it transpires, may not be the only player swapping east London for Manchester this summer, with United also setting their sights on Summerville.
The Athletic report that United are amongst several clubs monitoring Summerville, who has already turned heads for the Netherlands at the World Cup. The 24-year-old, who netted a stunning goal for the Dutch in their 2-2 draw with Japan, ranks among West Ham’s most marketable assets following relegation and could be on his way out.
Summerville’s adaptability has made him an appealing prospect for United should they pursue a winger this summer, though bolstering their midfield options will remain the club’s chief priority. United found success in last summer’s transfer market by pursuing established Premier League forwards in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, both of whom brought a fresh dimension to their attacking play.
While Summerville wouldn’t need any adjustment period to the Premier League, he would probably cost in the region of £50million. He still has three years left on his West Ham deal and West Ham director Daniel Kretinsky has indicated the club don’t need to sell prized assets on the cheap.
Marcus Rashford’s situation will significantly influence whether United pursue a move for Summerville or another winger during the transfer window. The 28 year old moved to Barcelona on loan last summer with an option to make the transfer permanent, which was initially thought to be a foregone conclusion.
However, Barca have subsequently spent £70m on a deal to secure Anthony Gordon’s services at the Nou Camp, leaving Rashford’s future uncertain. With two years still remaining on his contract, should he return, United might not pursue another wide forward.
