Former Super Eagles forward and African Player of the Year, Victor Ikpeba, has expressed satisfaction with the level of competition and intensity on display at the ongoing 2026 Bet9ja Foundation Ex-Internationals Cup.

The former Super Eagles forward described the tournament as a valuable platform for inspiring and mentoring young football talents.
Speaking with Sports247 after FC Ikpeba’s entertaining 2-2 draw against FC Odini at Alade Stadium on Wednesday, the Nigerian football legend praised the players for their commitment, fighting spirit, and determination throughout the encounter.
“I think both teams and the players showed a lot of spirit, commitment, and aggressiveness in their play, and that is what we want to see from our young lads,” Ikpeba said.
“The 2-2 scoreline is a reflection of the game. It was very physical, but I enjoyed the match and we can now wait until Saturday for the reverse fixture.”
The former AS Monaco striker also highlighted the importance of the competition in building a lasting football legacy and guiding the next generation of players.
“It’s a legacy piece, you know, and I’m happy to be here. The boys are happy to see me too,” he added.
Responding to questions about his influence on the players, especially after FC Ikpeba improved following his arrival and eventually scored twice, Ikpeba explained that mentorship remains one of the major reasons former internationals are involved in the competition.
“That is why we are here. That is why the legends are here. We are here to inspire them,” he stated.
“I’ve known some of these boys for about two years because I’ve been involved with them before. They have that spirit and fighting mentality.”
Ikpeba also commended the organisers for putting together a well-structured competition while urging match officials to maintain fairness throughout the tournament.
“I hope the officiating will be fair for all the teams so that nobody complains about poor officiating. But so far, kudos to the organisers for putting this competition together,” he concluded.
Wednesday’s fixtures at the 2026 Bet9ja Foundation Ex-Internationals Cup delivered goals, drama, and thrilling moments across different venues.
At Alade Stadium, FC Odini and FC Ikpeba played out the most exciting game of the day in a pulsating 2-2 draw.
Malomo Basit gave Odini the lead inside the opening minute before Daniel Okon restored parity for Ikpeba with a well-placed header.
Nsikak Nsikak later put Odini ahead again in the 71st minute, but Assurance Solomon struck late to secure an important equaliser for FC Ikpeba ahead of the second leg.
In Badagry, FC Agali took a significant step towards qualification with a commanding 3-1 victory over FC Oloyede.
Matthew Idowu netted a brace while Solomon Joseph added the third goal, despite Lawanson Esho pulling one back for Oloyede.
Meanwhile, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, FC Akanni edged FC Dominic 1-0 courtesy of an 85th-minute strike from substitute Boluwatife Iwaojuku.
Earlier in the game, goalkeeper Hameed Balogun had denied Hanif Sanusi from the penalty spot to keep FC Akanni in contention before the late winner.
