Achraf Hakimi’s transfer from Inter Milan to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 makes him the most expensive right-back in football history.
The Moroccan international arrived in the French capital for a fee of €68 million after impressing PSG during his time at San Siro under the management of Antonio Conte. Hakimi only spent one season at Inter before leaving for Ligue 1, having joined the Nerazzurri from Real Madrid for €43m in 2020.
Before Hakimi’s move from Inter to PSG, Joao Cancelo held the title of the most expensive right-back of all time. The Portuguese star joined Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City from Juventus for €65m in 2019, having only signed for the Old Lady one season prior.
Mateus Nunes was converted into a right-back during the final 18 months of Guardiola’s career at Man City and he would be third on this list as a result. However, he arrived as a central midfielder from Wolverhampton Wanderers, so he has been excluded from contention.
Therefore, Ben White is the third most expensive right-back of all time thanks to his €58.5m transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion to Arsenal in the summer of 2021. Initially regarded as overpriced, White has impressed at the Emirates.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the fourth most expensive right-back of all time due to his €55m transfer from Crystal Palace to Manchester United in 2019. Wan-Bissaka, a Crystal Palace academy graduate, left his boyhood club after a breakout 2018/19 campaign.
Another Premier League transfer is the fifth biggest move involving a right-back in history – Kyle Walker from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester City. Man City paid Spurs a fee of €52.7m to sign the England international in 2017. He enjoyed a brilliant career at the club before leaving in 2024.
In sixth place is Jules Kounde, who moved from Sevilla to Barcelona for €50m in 2022, after impressing the Camp Nou officials with a series of eye-catching performances.
The seventh-most expensive right-back of all-time is once again the aforementioned Hakimi, who appears in the top 10 for the second time. His transfer from Real Madrid to Inter cost €43m. In eight place is another player to feature for a second time – Joao Cancelo. He joined Juventus for €40.4m from Valencia in 2018.
Jeremie Frimpong is the most recent addition to this list following his €40m transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool in 2025. He replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield following the Englishman’s controversial transfer to Real Madrid.
Rounding out the top 10 is Jurrien Timber, who left boyhood club Ajax to join Arsenal for €40m in 2023 – the same summer as Declan Rice and Kai Havertz also moved to the Emirates Stadium.
