Gunners join race for Mateus Fernandes
The Times reports Arsenal are amongst several clubs tracking West Ham star Mateus Fernandes. Gunners supporters need no introduction to the Portuguese midfielder, who squandered a glorious opportunity to put the Hammers in front during Sunday’s encounter.
Fernandes only joined West Ham last summer following Southampton’s relegation, but he’s made an immediate impact. According to reports, PSG are monitoring his situation, while Manchester United have also been keeping a watchful eye.
Significantly, West Ham are understood to be adamant about retaining Fernandes, provided they secure their Premier League status. Should relegation occur, however, the club would reportedly find themselves in a far weaker bargaining position.
The Hammers currently sit in 18th place in the table. According to the CIES Football Observatory, Fernandes’ valuation ranges between £54m and £62m.
Pep Guardiola takes action after win
City maintained the heat on the league leaders with Wednesday evening’s commanding 3-0 victory over Palace, ensuring the title race extends beyond Monday.
Oliver Glasner’s men host Arsenal on the final day and following the Etihad encounter, Pep Guardiola appeared to share some thoughts with the Palace squad who could yet influence his side’s pursuit of the trophy.
Footage captured Guardiola circulating amongst the Palace players after the final whistle. Sky Sports pundits suggested he was offering encouragement for their upcoming Arsenal fixture.
He was seen in conversation with Chris Richards, Jefferson Lerma, Maxence Lacroix and Adam Wharton. When quizzed about the title race afterwards, he remarked: “It depends on them [Arsenal]. If they win two games, nothing to do, nothing to talk. All we can be is in there just in case. The last two games are tough.”
