Former Nigerian international Efe Sodje has blamed both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Super Eagles players for the senior national team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Recall that Nigeria was eliminated after a playoff defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking their second consecutive absence from the tournament.
In a chat with Brila FM, Sodje expressed his disappointment that Nigeria will not be playing at the 2026 World Cup.

“Very disappointing. With the quality of players we have, we should be there.”
“But it’s not just the players. We have to also look at the people upstairs because decisions and structure play a big role in why we didn’t qualify.”
Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the African playoff finals, following a 1-1 draw after extra time. This marks the second consecutive World Cup the three-time African champions will miss.
The Super Eagles’ qualifying campaign was derailed by a combination of tactical instability, administrative failures, and off-field controversies.
Nigeria struggled during the group stages, finishing second in Group C behind South Africa. Dropping points in crucial matches forced them into the tense playoff route.

Moving away from predictable, wing-heavy approaches, Chelle has implemented central build-ups and compact midfield transitions to improve game control and press for the full 90 minutes.
This has been evident in the Unity Cup triumph, where the Super Eagles defeated Zimbabwe and Jamaica before playing out a 2-2 draw against Poland in an international friendly.
The team is expected to face Portugal on Wednesday in another friendly game.
