Emily Casey fell seriously ill on a family holiday in Gran Canaria, and was rushed to hospital where medics said they needed to drain fluid from Emily’s lungs as she had pneumonia
A British mum in a coma in Gran Canaria has developed sepsis, her family says.
Doctors believed Emily Casey, 34, had pneumonia and decided they needed to drain the fluid from Emily’s lungs. The mum of five, who was on a family holiday when she fell ill, was placed into an induced coma but had showed signs of improvement.
But her family says her condition has deteriorated, as now she has developed sepsis in her bloodsteam. Speaking from the island, her husband Jamie gave an update today, saying: “The doctors told us they had caught the sepsis in time and were treating her with antibiotics.
“As the days went by, Emily seemed to be carrying on improving until today we were told that Emily had gone backwards, they told us the doctors had done an X-ray on Emily’s chest and were shocked to discover the pneumonia has taken over her lungs again, and that the sepsis is now in her bloodstream. Yet they also tell us they can’t seem to find the correct antibiotics to treat the infection, so more blood tests are needed”
Doctors on the Spanish island initially asked the family for £3,000 upfront to carry out a CT scan when Emily was admitted. Jamie, who lives with Emily and their children on the Wirral, Merseyside, said medics told him one of Emily’s lungs became full of fluid and the other was partially filled.
But Emily did not tell her insurance company she had a recent pneumonia battle at home before she flew for the Canary Island. It means this package is likely to be invalid.
Jamie added: “Just after the first day of Emily being in the coma, I was asked by the doctor for £8000 and was also asked about insurance. Emily does have insurance but as Emily didn’t declare that she recently had pneumonia, they have told us there is a good chance the policy will be void.”
Jamie had to return to England with the kids to arrange childcare before flying back to Spain. He said the family has since struggled to get in contact with the insurance company.
Jamie has now launched a GoFundMe page to help cover medical costs and bring Emily home. The dad added: “Emily is only 34 years old and is the mother to our five children.
“I thank you all from the bottom of mine and our children’s hearts for any donations you can make during this difficult time no matter how big or small.”
