Head coach of Rangers International F.C., Fidelis Ilechukwu, has warned that Nigerian clubs must begin retaining experienced and quality players if they hope to compete successfully in continental football.
Speaking after guiding Rangers to the Nigeria Premier Football League title, Ilechukwu stressed that success in CAF competitions requires stronger and more experienced squads.

“You need quality and experienced players to compete in Africa,” Ilechukwu said.
According to the Rangers coach, the constant departure of top talents from Nigerian clubs continues weakening teams on the continental stage.
“Player exits are affecting Nigerian clubs badly,” he implied.
Ilechukwu highlighted the growing trend of players moving to leagues in countries such as Tanzania, Ghana and Zambia as a major concern for Nigerian football.
“We lose too many important players,” he noted.
The experienced tactician explained that continuity and squad stability are essential for clubs hoping to challenge consistently in CAF tournaments.
“You cannot build strong continental teams when key players leave constantly,” he added.
Nigerian clubs have struggled in recent years to make deep runs in CAF interclub competitions despite domestic success.
“This has become a recurring problem,” many football observers believe.
Ilechukwu remains convinced that improving player retention could significantly strengthen Nigerian football on the continent.
“Nigerian clubs have the talent to compete,” he stressed.
