Manchester United have told Andre Onana that they don’t want him back following his loan spell with Trabzonspor – with the Old Trafford side giving the Cameroon international a good reason for their decision.
Onana was sent on loan to the Turkish side in September following a calamitous display in the Carabao Cup exit to Crewe. The performances of the former Inter Milan No.1 had been heavily criticised following his €50 million move in 2023, so it came as little surprise when United decided to part with him.
The 30-year-old has maintained a stance that he would like to return to Old Trafford at the end of this agreement to compete with Senne Lammens for the No.1 jersey, but this is set to be rejected by United, according to The Daily Mail.
Man Utd don’t believe Onana is suited for a backup role
With the Red Devils ready to sell backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir this summer, Onana’s hopes of a revival at Man Utd would have been raised. However, this prospect has been dashed by Old Trafford chiefs, who plan to loan the goalkeeper to Trabzonspor once again next season.
United’s rationale for offloading Onana is logical: they believe that his extroverted personality makes him an unsuitable candidate to play as a backup to Lammens.
When his wages of around €135,000 (£120,000) per week are added into the equation, it makes little sense for him to be retained.
Trabzonspor have decided they want to retain him.
Speaking in April, president Ertugrul Dogan said: “We love him. If the conditions are right, we want him to stay.”
How are Man Utd’s other loanees doing?
Marcus Rashford is the highest-profile of Man Utd’s loan players, but while his switch to Barcelona is going well, his future at the Catalan club hangs in the balance. Barca are unwilling to pay his €30m buyout clause but in a new twist Rashford has shown a willingness to renegotiate his contract in a move that could save Spain’s champions €4 million per year for the next three seasons.
One deal on the verge of completion is Rasmus Hojlund’s permanent switch to Napoli, which is set to net the Old Trafford side a transfer windfall of €50m. This will be confirmed if and when Antonio Conte’s side seal a Champions League spot for next season.
Finally, there is Jadon Sancho. The winger has had a disastrous spell at United since completing an €85m move to Old Trafford in 2021 and he has struggled to impress on loan at Aston Villa. United have not taken up the option of extending his contract and he is set for free agency in the summer, with Borussia Dortmund interested in a permanent deal.
Youngsters Toby Collyer, Harry Amass and Ethan Wheatley, meanwhile, have been gaining confidence in the lower ranks of the EFL.
United have several major issues to resolve with their loan players, but Onana’s future already appears to have been written – and that means leaving Old Trafford.
