Werder Bremen director Clemens Fritz has confirmed that there is “movement” around Chelsea target Karim Coulibaly.

The 18-year-old has emerged as one of the biggest talents in Germany football this summer. Because of injuries and a lack of overall squad depth and quality, Koulibaly was thrust into Bremen’s starting lineup at the beginning of the season, and he hasn’t looked back.

Naturally, the teenager is still raw in some aspects of his game, and Werder have not had a particularly impressive season, but Koulibaly has managed to stand out and look the real deal.

Unsurprisingly, suitors have come to the fore. Reports in recent weeks have suggested that a summer departure is already all but set in stone, with Koulibaly keen to join a bigger club. The Germany youth international reportedly dreams of playing for PSG.

The French giants are monitoring the situation, as are Chelsea, who have been perhaps most concretely linked with a move for the centre-back. Bremen, though, will not allow him to leave cheaply and are hoping for a club-record fee in the region of €50 million.

Coulibaly could join Chelsea – but stay at Bremen

BILD has now provided an interesting update on Koulibaly’s situation. Bremen have managed to confirm their place in next season’s Bundesliga, which naturally puts them in a stronger negotiating position.

However, that does not mean that they are now looking to keep Koulibaly. On the contrary, the fee he could generate is necessary to acquire some much-needed reinforcements this summer.

In that sense, nothing has really changed for Coulibaly. One new piece of information, though, is that the teenager could leave Bremen this summer but still play for them next season.

The German outlet suggests that a deal could possibly be structured in a way that would see Coulibaly play another season in the Bundesliga, which is likely to be beneficial for him at this stage of his development.

A sale and subsequent loan back to Bremen is “conceivable,” according to Werder director Clemens Fritz, who confirmed to the tabloid: “It is a conceivable option for players of Karim’s age. I don’t want to rule it out entirely.”

Fritz insists that there have been no genuine offers for Coulibaly at this point, but he admits that things are starting to heat up. “There’s definitely some movement, but nothing is concrete,” he said.
