Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has given a string of important managerial updates, with the latest from Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea.
Neuer seals new Bayern Munich deal
Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has signalled his intention to stay at Bayern Munich, having agreed a one-year deal with the Bavarians.
Romano confirmed via his YouTube channel: “Manuel Neuer will stay at Bayern Munich for one more season. The agreement is done and approved by the legal teams – Neuer will sign a one‑year contract running to June 2027, with official confirmation expected in the next days.
“Bayern had options on the market but always wanted to continue with Neuer; the club trust his experience for another campaign after a big season – Bundesliga title, deep Champions League run and DFB‑Pokal final. So Neuer stays, no surprises – pen to paper soon.”
Carrick to continue as Man Utd manager
Interim Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is set to get the green light to continue at Old Trafford on a permanent basis.
Romano said: “Internally the management, players and directors have made a very clear decision: Carrick has to stay as Manchester United permanent manager. This is the feeling now.
“It will be time to get the final green light from co‑owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and it is also important to have conversations over new contracts, because Michael Carrick signed for Manchester United on an interim, short‑term contract on basic conditions. If he is going to be the permanent manager and keep leading the project, you need a long‑term contract and an important deal to clarify the terms. That is the next step.
“What remains is the formal green light from co‑owner and the contract negotiation – Carrick signed short‑term as interim and now the club will agree a long‑term deal with proper terms. Carrick is excited, believes he can do even more with smart signings and Champions League football, and United are aligned on keeping him. Expect that to be formalised soon.
“Carrick is excited about this. He is very happy and convinced he can do even better at Manchester United. He arrived in January in a very complicated situation and brought Manchester United back to Champions League football.
“Do not underestimate the impact of Michael Carrick on players. For example, Kobbie Mainoo was about to leave Manchester United on loan in January; then Carrick arrives, Mainoo starts, Mainoo becomes an important part of the project and signs a new contract. Bruno Fernandes is also very happy with Michael Carrick – Bruno is probably the most important player at Manchester United right now, and the impact on a player like Bruno is very important. So the feeling is absolutely positive and Carrick is expected to continue.”
Mourinho close to Real Madrid job
Jose Mourinho is set to complete his shock return to crisis-hit Real Madrid, where his disciplinarian attitude is seen as a perfect tonic to the club’s current problems.
“I told you at the end of March and beginning of April Mourinho would be ready and open to return to Real Madrid. In mid-April conversations started between Mourinho and Real Madrid,” Romano said.
“In recent days I said the operation was advancing, and now I can tell you the operation for Jose Mourinho back to Real Madrid is reaching the final stages – it is getting very close. It is not done or closed yet; we are waiting for Florentino Pérez to give the final green light and proceed. Apart from that final approval, everything else – contract, salary, power, the idea Florentino has – is very, very advanced.
“I can guarantee Mourinho never needed convincing: he was never going to reject this job. Mourinho wants to understand what Real Madrid expect from him, but he is fully convinced a new chapter at Real Madrid is the right thing for his career now. He believes it can help Real Madrid in a difficult moment. Mourinho is excited. Now it is up to Florentino Perez to push the button. Timing will be the last factor.”
Next Chelsea manager latest
Romano also issued an update on the next Chelsea manager, with the Blues hoping to have the issue settled before the World Cup begins.
He said: “In the next days we will update also on the Chelsea manager situation. My understanding is that, apart from Xabi Alonso who is in conversations with his agent and open to returning to the Premier League, and Andoni Iraola who wants to stay in the Premier League and would be excited about the Chelsea job, Chelsea want to get a new manager as soon as possible.
“The plan is to have everything signed and announced before the World Cup period. That is the timing in Chelsea’s mind. This depends on conversations and talks, but Chelsea are moving forward and want to appoint a manager quickly.”
